When we think of Cloud in the business environment, we think of how we store and manage access to information. This way of thinking has drastically shifted throughout the past three years.

The workplace has become a blend of in-office, remote, and hybrid setups meaning businesses are being forced to incorporate Cloud-based systems. In fact, 78% of businesses in 2021 were using hybrid and multi-cloud solutions. Businesses have a few different options when selecting their Cloud solution, such as hybrid and multi-cloud solutions and both require multiple servers. So, what’s the difference between the two?

Hybrid Cloud
Hybrid Cloud solutions utilize onsite resources and are comprised of everything from servers to data centers, and networking to monitoring. With all these onsite resources, you might think  all of the data is private. However, public clouds are used in the hybrid solution, and move through a single source of architecture while being managed by a single policy or process to ensure integrity.

There are many advantages to a hybrid solution that may lead organizations to choose this route. We’ve listed three potential reasons below!

  • Security - Hybrid solutions present the best of both worlds. You can keep secure or proprietary information on private servers and onsite data centers. This reduces the chance of sensitive data being attacked, and allows you to organize and store data based on criticality if desired.

  • Distributed Workforce - If your organization has many offices, is hybrid, or even permanently remote, hybrid cloud solutions can be accessed anywhere! This is great news for the ⅔ of corporations that made the decision to work remotely during COVID, and will continue to apply in the post-COVID era. As long as there is a strong internet connection, your team can access the cloud data.

  • Scalability - With public cloud solutions, it’s easier to permanently add data centers or additional hardware. This allows for significant growth opportunities, both in terms of data and personnel, a need for any growing or aspiring organization.

These are only a few of the advantages of a hybrid cloud solution. It’s important to explore various options to find what works best for your organization’s needs and scope.

Multi-Cloud
Multi-cloud solutions utilize a provider, or several providers, with multiple cloud computing services and may house Cloud functionalities in various facilities. This solution relies on the service provider engagement, meaning you don’t need to spare as many resources for distribution, but the control of information distribution and infrastructure will likely stay with the chosen provider.

The advantages of a multi-cloud solution are different from those associated with hybrid solutions but are just as viable for organizations. We’ve provided three merits of multi-cloud below!

  • Avoid Vendor Lock-in - Vendor Lock-in is a scary prospect when you’re committing significant amounts of data to be stored and managed by a single cloud provider. Many businesses will say they want the ability to change providers, especially if they do not feel their cloud computing needs are being met or if they expect their needs to change over time. Multi-cloud solutions, by nature, do not tie you to a single provider.

  • Adapt and Innovate - Cloud technology is quickly evolving even as you read this blog! Multi-cloud solutions are highly adaptable, flexible, and allow for innovative implementation. Organizations that utilize multi-cloud can optimize the newest technology to fit their needs and pick-and-choose their focal points.

  • Optimize - Get the best of every world! Every server has different strengths and weaknesses, but by utilizing multiple providers, you can optimize your solution with the different strengths of various providers and mitigate those potential weaknesses. Additionally, multi-cloud solutions can optimize costs and reallocate provider and internal resources as needed to save money and data!

Because there are several other pros to implementing multi-cloud solutions, businesses should take the time to identify their needs and scope to select the option that's best for their situation.
