redefINE Day 2 Recap
And just like that, day 2 of redefINE has come to an end. If you missed out, don’t worry! We have included a summary and links to today’s sessions below.
A.I. Humorist Janelle Shane helped us kick off day 2 with an intriguing talk focused on artificial intelligence and the many ways machine learning algorithms can get things wrong. She covered everything from incorrect auto generated picture captions to incomplete Tetris games, new names for pies and even the use of plush giraffes on mechanical hands trying to solve a Rubik's cube.
In addition, she discussed whether or not A.I. is actually smart and the narrow focus A.I. has on the real world, which often leads to shortcuts being taken to get to results. Because of this, she emphasized the importance of determining good uses for A.I. applications, including being smart about how we use it.
Her talk was followed by a Q&A session with the audience where she was asked what are some of her biggest lessons learned, whether we should worry that our reliance is getting ahead of where the technology currently stands, and much more. If you’d like to watch the recorded session with Janelle Shane, you can do so here.
Shane’s talk was followed by a career-focused roundtable discussion highlighting what skills recruiters and organizations are looking for in today’s technology job candidates. INE’s Director of Public Relations, Kathryn Brown, was joined by Sunil Sud, Executive Recruiter, Joe Hudson, Principal Recruiting Lead, and Gerald Auger, Chief Content Creator of the Simply Cyber YouTube channel.
During the roundtable, the three were asked a variety of questions including the importance of obtaining a college degree, how students can navigate the current job-hunting landscape, how easy it is to switch careers, and more. Throughout the discussion, each speaker offered valuable advice not only from their perspective, but from their area of expertise as well.
If you’d like to catch up on their discussion, you can find the recording of it here.
